Peter Lloyd
July 5, 2011 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Journalist/Producer, ABC Lateline
Peter Lloyd was appointed as the ABC’s South East Asia correspondent during what was a most turbulent period. Foreign correspondents are expected to report from scenes of disaster in a calm and authoritative manner, so it’s easy to forget that the reporter may have just witnessed something too distressing to actually broadcast.
Peter covered the Bali bombings, the Boxing Day tsunami and the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. The consequence, he began having terrible nightmares, was drinking and smoking too much, and didn’t admit he was suffering from post traumatic stress.
In Singapore he bought a small quantity of methamphetamine (“ice”). He was arrested and spent six months in Changi prison, discovering what it was like to change from reporter to the story. Peter recounted his experiences in “Inside Story” published late last year.
He returned to work for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s news and current affairs program Lateline in April 2010 as a senior journalist and producer.
